Team Tybee held their 5th place to finish their 3rd Worrell 1000. After
sprays of champagne and many congratulatory hugs to and from other
sailors/teams it was off to the awards ceremony. The team received their 5th
place finish along with a whopping round of applause and cheers. After the
awards it was to The Raven (one of our sponsors) for the best prime rib
dinner in Virginia Beach. Many other teams joined us to share "war stories"
and promises of staying in touch.
Steve and Kenny did an awesome job getting the boat and themselves up the
coast. Mark Lavine was the key individual that kept the boat seaworthy.
Jana and Bob Gillstrom assisted Chuck and myself with the other necessary
tasks of getting the team 1000 miles up the coast. (luggage, food prep,
laundry, first aid, managing safety gear, electronics, etc.)
We want to thank all of our sponsors, for without them there can be no Team
Tybee. Also to all our friends, families, etc. who in one way or another
have assisted and supported Team Tybee.

Well, we've been out of touch a few days due to connection problems at the
motels. We've ridden ferries and 3 unplanned night legs. Unusual for the
Outer Banks there's been little air for the boats. Thursday night the first
boat did not arrive the beach until 1:30AM.
Team Tybee is in good spirits. One more leg to go. After all the boat
breakdowns and variable weather we are still in 5th place overall!! Virginia
Beach, here we come.
Want to thank everyone who has followed our team online and by phone. The
support has been great.

Much of the "lay day" in Myrtle Beach was spent fixing rudders instead of
resting. Boat mechanic Mark Lavine doesn't even have to ask what needs to be
fixed any more, it's always the rudders!
Team Guidant fixed lasagna for us Monday night. The guys were finally able
to relax and socialize. After pulling that "all-nighter" to Myrtle the down
time was welcome.
Today the guys made a fantastic first place finish! After a good start off
Myrtle Beach this morning they ran downwind in light air. There was a wind
shift creating an upwind sail for about the last half hour. Tomorrow it's to Atlantic Beach.

The air was light most of the night resulting in a 12 1/2 hour drift from
Isle of Palms to Myrtle Beach. As the sun rose boats started hitting the
beach. Steve and Kenny are now getting warmed up, fed and then to bed for
some much needed sleep.

On the leg from Tybee to Isle of Palms Team Tybee did a fantastic job. They
sailed over 30 miles without their spinnaker (due to a broken spinnaker line)
and still arrived within 45 minutes of the first boat. The spinnaker (the
big orange sail) increases the amount of wind they can capture and thus
increases their speed. But they made the most of what they had and came out
great. As a result of good sailing they moved into 5th place overall.
After a day of rest and continued boat repairs (the rudder system on these
boats breaks down almost daily) they are on their way to Myrtle Beach. The
ground crew arrived here around 9 PM. After unloading their vehicles amongst
all the bikers here for "Bike Week", they prepared for what will probably be
an all-nighter. The winds are light and out of the North, making for a long
sail.

Team Tybee sailed their way to a second place finish for the Jacksonville-Tybee leg. Steve
and Kenny did an awesome job, making up a lot of lost time from earlier boat breakdowns. Currently they are less than 20
minutes from the 5th place boat. There is a lot of race left to go and
anything can happen.
A special thanks goes to Tybee's Xi Delta Chi for organizing and promoting
the "Pack the Beach" events. There was great entertainment, food, drinks,
etc. The crowd greeting the sailors was awesome! Everyone should come to
send the team off tonight at 6PM.
Also, thanks to Rob Sales and Steve Watson with LaurelJane Enterprises for
hosting a hospitality room for the sail teams and race officials. All the
teams were extremely complimentary of the gesture and the food/drinks were
greatly appreciated. Thanks also to Ocean Plaza for supplying the room.
Tybee Island is absolutely the best, most hospitable stop on the whole race.
We thank everyone for their support of Team Tybee and demonstrating true
"Southern Hospitality".

Update by Chuck Bargeron 5/10/01:
Soon after today's start Team Tybee suffered a
broken rudder which impaired their ability to perform the sail maneuvers
necessary for speed. North of
Flagler Beach the team decided to come into the beach for repairs. The
ground crew, following along A1A, was ready and waiting. The repairs took
less than 5 minutes and Team Tybee was underway again. The sailors gained
significant ground, passing several boats and maintaining their overall 6th
place standing.
Chuck said, "They still make metal coat hangers. People still use them to
tie up their mufflers and for TV antenna. If we have to use one to hold this
boat together that's what we will do. We are sailing!"

Team Tybee finished today
(Wednesday) in 4th place, 6th place overall even after spending a full day of
repairing. Thanks goes to The Finish Line of Jensen Beach Florida who went
right to work on repairing several holes in the starboard hull. We'll see ya
on Tybee Friday!!
